The small wooden houses are studies, born from the desire to experiment and research independent from the clients’ needs. Most of the sculptural works are made of solid wooden blocks, which De Lucchi models with a chainsaw. The architect said he realised the wish to work manually with wood while sharpening pencils with a penknife.

Works by Michele De Lucchi, at Ingo Maurer, Munich, Germany, February 4 – March 20.

On Display is a great selection of design pieces that are “Made in Spain” in an unusual and creative context: the circus. Go deep into a space where objects explode, stay balanced or are chopped in a guillotine. The wonderful world of the circus offers you the most fascinating products. Different scenes inspired by the art of the circus in which you will have an extraordinary vision of objects. Enjoy a magical and unique setting, in which you will surely see the most mysterious side of the most global Spanish design.

The Design Circus, at Círculo de Bellas Artes, Madrid, Spain, November 12 – January 24, Curated by CuldeSac, via: Yatzer

clip_image001Popped by the opening of the inaugural PRISM Gallery exhibition, MindTheGap, featuring the stunning works of Barry McGee and Phil Frost. There are so many angles a post on this opening could take, just doing a quick google of it, quickly you can see who’s who that showed up, the architecture, the artists, the gallerist… so let’s just focus on what was truly most inspiring about the event. The art. The details. The space. And to take in such overwhelming amounts of pattern heavy art that took a bit to process… and perched on sunset in West Hollywood, the three tiered roof with breath taking LA views were exactly what you needed… although the sparkling lights of the city felt as if you were staring into another patterned piece of art to lose yourself in. With all of the work shown, you could easily spend some time discovering details, turning away, turning back, and still see something new. So explore some of my favorite views of the show on the next page…

clip_image001The 100% Design Exhibitions are a great time to mingle with the cream of the Design Industry and I really had a great time covering the Tokyo Edition. The theme this year was “Love Green” and the Exhibitors did a great job interpreting and weaving in the sentiments into their designs. The theme was well reflected in products made using alternative energy sources and natural materials. In short everything looked green too, I mean the color green!
Let’s kick off this coverage with the Cube Exhibition, which is a brand new addition to the 100% Tokyo. This nook actually showcased works of young designers who brought to life the Love Green Concept.

TOHO-Leo Corp and plant designer Harumi Suwa of Atelier Yukiyanagi worked with forty-five talented designers to recreate the green-magic! The dominant installation was this 2.2 m-squared cube that with a planted green façade. This Vertical Garden included beauties like Calathea and Peperomia.

Many Exhibitors brought out their innovations and sparked debates on the real fundamentalism of Eco or Green Concepts.

In the next coverage expect the 100% Café by Subway!
