Nick Gentry uses old floppy disks, VHS tapes, and other antiquated media storage devices as his chosen medium for painting.  The subjects tend to be facial in nature, most likely due to the omnipresence of circular mechanisms inherent in such things. From his About section:

Throughout history, information has always been recorded on physical objects. Important documents, favourite songs, videos and more were stored on mountains of tapes, polaroids, cassettes and disks. As media is rapidly absorbed into the World Wide Web the rich variety of formats of the past are becoming obsolete.

This represents a big shift away from physical, real world objects, driving towards a human existence that is ultimately governed by billions of invisible data files.

Each floppy disk used in the paintings has a history and story of its own. It represents the increasing pace of the modern life cycle, where objects are created, used and disposed of quicker than ever. To challenge this notion, as these personal artefacts of life are cast aside, the obsolete are now given new life and a renewed purpose by using them as a medium for art.

Katharina Fritsch first showed her work in the United States in 1994, at the Dia Center for the Arts. There she debuted Rattenkönig (Rat king), her now famous work in which 12-feet-tall black rodents face outward in a circle, towering over the viewer, their tails bound together in a giant knot. Like all Fritsch’s work, Rattenkönig is simultaneously seductive and unnerving. She often transforms quotidian objects or ordinary looking figures into something new and strange, through repetition and manipulation of scale and color. Her sculptures are the result of a time-consuming process: a piece is usually molded by hand, then cast in plaster, reworked, and then cast again in polyester.

clip_image001Que Houxo is a Japanese artist who does live paintings. His style is quite colorful, he uses fluorescent paints with black lights. These photos are from The Paint Players event and were made by Evan Roth. The video below is from another event, but it shows what you can espect when you go to one of his live sessions. I would definitely go if I had the chance.

clip_image001Shu Uemura Art of Hair finally got their online store going ~ i’ve been obsessed with their moisture velvet conditioner and masque ~ they quickly made the list of products i actually end up buying again and again. I’ve also been anxiously waiting for the black glossy Shu Uemura paddle brush ~ which has finally arrived on the webstore! While this in and of itself wasn’t all that extraordinary, what struck me was the packaging when it arrived. Black shipping box, sealed with black on white Shu Uemura Art of Hair tape sealing it ~ upon opening, black and white typographic logo pattern ~ and custom tissue paper as well… and each object individually wrapped and buffered in tissue paper padding. I can’t even imagine what they would do for gift wrap! It was so beautiful, i had to photograph first and open after, as hard as that was! Also a few peeks at the paddle brush ~ while i usually use wood brushes with wood bristles, i’m loving this one! So see it all on the next page…
