This is Britain’s train expert, Paul Priestman’s design, the double-decker Mercury train.
In his opinion, Britain’s long-distance high-speed railway transport has been long overdue, and very much outdated. He planned to introduce the Mercury as a key to achieving sustainable, low-carbon transportation and invigorating British industry. The best example of badass engineering and total luxury?
The 400 meter long double-decker—if pursued, it would be the country’s first—travels at 225 mph, thanks to an extended nose that’s “one of the most extreme in the world.” It houses traditional commuter seats outfitted with entertainment systems, as well as private compartments, and there’s a play area for kids as well as a bar and lounge for bigger kids.
“The Mercury is a crucial opportunity to champion British design and engineering in an increasingly competitive global economy.” – Paul Priestman.
But no matter how I see it, this seemed to be a long-haul high-speed train, with luxury entertainment onboard. But I just can’t imagine this as a daily commuting train. Perhaps I’m too used to sardine-style commuting that is always 5-minutes or even 10-minutes late. Would be a great option though, if it’s a long-haul bullet train.
