Student-Built Fuel-Efficient Car Rules Shell Eco-Marathon With 2475.5 MPG

Eco Factor: Prototype vehicle with a highly fuel-efficient engine.

While 50mpg might sound wonderful to some, check out this vehicle built by a team of student designers from Laval University in Quebec, Canada. The vehicle which took the grand prize at this year’s Shell Eco-Marathon gets a jaw-dropping 2487.5 miles per gallon of fuel. The team took the crown last year as well with a vehicle that achieved 2757.1mpg.

The competition included 42 teams from 9 high schools and 28 universities. The race had two categories – Prototype and UrbanConcept. While the prototype category included vehicles that sacrifice aesthetics for fuel efficiency, the UrbanConcept category saw a competition between road-worth vehicles.

Teams can use whatever energy source that suits them the best from gasoline to capacitors. The Prototype entry had 28 vehicles powered by IC engines, five fuel cell hydrogen vehicles, two solar-powered vehicles and two powered by diesel. The UrbanConcept included six vehicle powered by conventional gas engines, two by diesel, one powered by hydrogen and one powered by renewable solar energy.
