Job Outlook for Design School Grads

Design school graduates can find employment in a variety of industries, doing anything from creating new car models, ad campaigns, furniture or fashion.

Many design schools also have liberal arts core curriculums, providing students with many different professional skills as well as personal and professional interests. The job outlook for design school grads is diverse, offering a variety of careers and working options. The following details some of those careers and employment opportunities.

Self-employment is common among design school grads as it allows room for creative freedom and the flexibility to set their own hours. Graphic designers, for instance, can work as freelancers for companies, newspapers and magazine. Almost all companies need graphic designers to create logos, designs and layouts. Graphic designers also help companies to build brands by creating visually recognizable identities.

Ad agencies and marketing firms also hire graphic designers to create print marketing campaigns. Graphic designers can also work in television and for magazines and newspapers.

There are also several other positions available to design school grads. Such positions include architectural and environmental designers, Illustrators and artists.

Design industries are unique and diverse. Industrial designers create tools, equipment and toys, while interior designers deal with livable spaces adding coordination, class and style to clients’ homes and business.

Fashion design jobs are not easy to get but are lucrative when received. Fashion design grads can work as store buyers, trend forecasters, costume designer and stylists. Fashion design grads with good writing skills can become fashion writers.

Design school graduates have many job options. However, the field is very competitive. Knowing how to do many things and being able to do them well, is an asset. In addition to having many well-defined skills, design school grads should be business savvy, stay up-to-date on trends as well as posses the drive to succeed and a positive attitude.
